Acrylic Nails are created using a liquid and a powder. The liquid contains a substance called EMA (Ethyl Methacrylate).  Some salons use a damaging liquid that contains MMA's (Methyl Methacrylate). MMA liquid is cheap compared to EMA so some salons choose to use it as it means they can keep their costs down. However, MMA liquid is for the dental industry.  It is a very hard substance that is used to make crowns for teeth.  It is not designed to be used for Acrylic nails. Serious adverse skin reactions and permenant nail deformities are some of the risks of using MMA liquid. Long term use can also lead to permanent damage to the respiratory system.  This is often why the technicians wear masks.

 

MMA nail extensions are also too rigid for the natural nail plate. Though the extensions are very strong and resist breaking if accidentally caught or jammed, this often leads to painful breakage of the nail plate. It can also result in severe skin infections. As a result this can stop your natural nail from ever growing back healthily.
